10 Tips for Cleaning Household Ornaments

Household ornaments are filled with memories and meaning. A light cleaning can help preserve ornaments and enhance their beauty for years to come. Always study the condition of an ornament before cleaning it. Some ornaments may have suffered a lot of wear and tear and may not be fit for cleaning. If you're unsure as to whether an ornament will survive a cleaning, lightly brush it with a feather duster or simply set it aside.

1. Always wear latex or soft cotton gloves when cleaning ornaments, as the natural oils of your hands can damage paint and intricate details. This will also help to avoid leaving fingerprints on glass items.

Source

2. Never submerge any household ornaments in water; ornaments -- especially those made of porcelain -- may collect water, causing them to mildew.

Source

3. Vintage ornaments often are decorated with mica or water-soluble paint; never use water to clean these. Instead, carefully remove excess grime with a soft cloth, then dust lightly with a feather duster.

Source

4. For pieces with a lot of small detail, use a soft-bristled brush or a feather duster to clean out all of the nooks and crannies. Be careful not to bump any delicate pieces that may dislodge if touched.

Source

5. Water and detergents can remove paint from ornaments. If a piece requires extensive cleaning, test a small spot of the ornament with a little bit of water before wiping down the whole piece.

Source

6. Never use paper towels to clean ornaments. Paper towels have a coarse texture and can mar the surface of delicate ornaments. Always use a soft cloth or jewelry-cleaning cloth.

Source

7. To prevent paper and cardboard surfaces from warping, wipe only small sections at a time with a slightly damp cloth. Let those sections dry before cleaning the rest of the ornament.

Source

8. Glass and plastic baubles may only require a light dusting before being stored. Glass ornaments with no decoration on the outside can be gently cleaned with a glass cleaner. If they are colored, clean only a small part of the ornament first to make sure the color is from the glass and not from paint.

Source

9. Clean ornaments that contain glitter using a feather duster. Don't attempt to clean glitter-coated ornaments if too much glitter falls off.

Source

10. Use a soft cloth or jewelry-cleaning cloth to gently rub dust and grime off of metal and crystal. Gold-plated and silver ornaments should be cleaned using a gentle circular motion. Special polishing creams are available at antique stores for silver, brass, copper, and bronze. Always do a spot test before cleaning the whole ornament.

Source

When storing, wrap each ornament separately in bubble wrap, acid-free tissue paper, or leftover wrapping paper. Use a sectioned box for storage, or place no more than two layers of ornaments into several smaller boxes. Make sure all containers are well-labeled before putting them away for storage. Never store anything on top of ornament boxes. Always store your household ornaments in a cool, dry place. If possible, avoid storing them in the attic, as attics collect heat, which may damage some of your more delicate ornaments.

4 Tips To Rid Bathroom of Mold and Mildew

The biggest  issue in cleaning a house may be the mold and mildew that can be found in your bathroom. Mold and mildew can easily grow in the bathroom due to the high levels of moisture from people taking showers. I have 4 cleaning tips that will help to discourage the growth of mold and mildew.

  1. A dehumidifier is a great way to remove moisture from the air. It is said that a home should have humidity levels between 30% and 50%. So if you have a dehumidifier that can measure the levels of humidity it would be very helpful in maintaining your humdity levels.

  2. Clean and dry the moistened areas as soon as possible after use.

  3. Cleaning with vinegar is always a plus because it has been found to kill 82% of mold and 99% of bacteria.  After every use, clean the shower or tub with hot water and soap, then spray the mold with full strength vinegar, let sit for at lease 10 - 15 minutes, then scrub the area with a stiff brush and then wipe clean. Repeat ths process until the mold has been completely removed.  I would even suggest to continue spraying the entire shower or bath with the vinegar at least once a month.

  4. This recipe is found to be the best homemade solution for removal of mildew. Mix the following in a bucket then add to a spray bottle, 1/2 gallon of water, 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide, alcohol and vinegar and 2 tablespoons of baking soda. Spray the solution on the mildewed area, wait 10 minutes then clean.

App Mention: Fridge Police for iPad

Fridge Police tracks foods' "opened on date" so you'll know when you opened the jar of applesauce sitting in your fridge.

Keeping track of your food is easy and fully utilizes technology currently available. When a user opens an item (say a jar of jam), he scans the item's barcode (like in a supermarket). Automatically, the product info (i.e. manufacturer, brand, item and jar size) is logged along with the "opened on" date. The user is then prompted to take a quick photo of the item (so you know what you've already logged) and that's it!

Getting Ready For Holiday Guests

The holidays are always great, but getting ready for them can be stressful. I am not sure about your house, but holidays for my family home means a big crowd and lots of overnight guests, especially since we always host Christmas Eve. I have a few suggestions that I hope will help you prepare. Believe me, they will work for you just as they have for me over the years.

1. As with anything, always plan and prepare as much ahead as possible. For our many guests, it always takes a lot of food. So I always start my cooking of vegetables right after Thanksgiving dinner and then set up my menu plan. Once your vegetables are cooked, store them in your freezer and that is a check mark off of your very long list.

2. I usually start my Christmas shopping around May, but I know that has not been possible for many this year. My suggestion would be to have a list of all the individuals that you will be buying gifts for and what gift you would like to give. With the season already in full swing time is valuable. Try shopping online for many gifts. I have found that you can receive free shipping on many items and if the store is not located in your state you won't be charged tax. Therefore, you save more money than if you had gone to the store yourself.

3. For my decorating needs I also start right after Thanksgiving. Christmas is my favorite time of year and I tend to overdo. If you start early it will give you the opportunity to look back over what you have done and fix your decorations for the better, each time.

4. Okay, now it is time to spruce up your home. Below you will find quick links to a few checklist that I have found on one of my favorite websites. Once you download the list I would suggest that you tweak it so that it will fill your needs better.

4. As far as cleaning goes I always like to clean from top to bottom and left to right in a room. That way it will be less likely for you to miss a spot. I like to always leave the guests rooms carpet cleaning for 2 days before expected time of arrival, then the mattress, linens and pillows for the day before. That way the room is much fresher. Just because, I usually leave something a little personal for the guests from me. This year I will leave homemade soaps and maybe facial scrubs, bath salts or bath oils that I have made myself.

5. It would be a good idea to also leave fresh towels and washcloths for each guest in each room. I usually also leave small bottles of lotion, shampoo and conditioner for each room. You know, like a hotel.

6. I am very fortunate that I have my own little baker. Every year one of my daughters takes care of baking all the pies, cakes, muffins and her specialty Coquito, Latin Egg Nog. Delicious! Oh, by the way, it is better to make the Coquito well in advance, a few weeks. It will give the ingredients time to blend, we usually add 1 cup of Brandy or Cognac. If you aren't so lucky to have your own baker, plan ahead at your local grocery or bakery by ordering in advance. That way you know you will have all that is needed for your event.

7. Last but not least, the night before, start setting up your tables, chairs and how they will be arranged in your home, along with all specialty dinnerware and serveware. As you go along, carry some of your cleaning items in a bucket and do some of the last minute dusting and cleaning as you go.

Everything is done and the guests are not there yet. So sit back, look over all your work and relax for the next day of great fun and holiday cheer.

College and Bed Bugs

Not sure if anyone has heard but bed bugs have become an epidemic in many major cities, Atlanta and New York to name a few. Bed bugs are tiny blood sucking nuisances. The name bed bug comes from the preferred home of the parasite. Bed bugs can feed on a human and go virtually unnoticed.

Bedbugs are much like roaches. They can be easily transferred from place to place by latching on to luggage, clothing, furniture and even our own precious and unsuspecting pets. Warehouses and college dorms are perfect locations for bedbugs to thrive.

If you have or believe that you have bedbugs you should vacuum the house to remove bugs and eggs from mattresses, carpet, walls, and other surfaces. Pay particular attention to seams, tufts and edges of mattresses and box springs, and the perimeter edge of wall-to-wall carpets. Afterward, dispose of the vacuum contents in a sealed trash bag. Steam cleaning of carpets is also helpful for killing bugs and eggs that vacuuming may have missed. For garments, sheets or towels it is best that you launder these items and use the hottest water possible. Make sure when coming home with newly purchased clothing, lingerie or other personal items (bed bugs have been found on clothing in the most elite of shopping areas) to launder or throw in a dryer for at least 20 minutes. The heat will kill the bedbugs. Then launder.

Bedbugs can find their way in even the cleanest homes. What is important is to locate and rid your home and personal items of these pesky little critters.

Time To Clean the Fireplace

It's that time of year when you want to relax with a big cup of hot chocolate next to a perfect fire in the fireplace. The only thing is you need to give it a good cleaning out before that first fire.

You will need the following items:

Newspaper, old sheets or anything to cover your flooring
Long rubber gloves
Small bucket with warm soapy water
Rags to clean with
ShopVac or a small broom
Garbage bags

In order to properly clean the fireplace you must first remove everything from around the hearth out of the way. You should then lay something down on the floor or carpet, like old sheets, so that it will not be damaged by any of the ashes or dirt.

Once you have everything moved out of the way and covered, you should then put on your long rubber gloves. The gloves will help to protect your hands from dirt and soot while removing the grate from the fireplace. Take your rag and dip it into the bucket of warm soapy water so you can clean as much ash and soot from the removed grate. Let the grate sit and dry while you continue cleaning.

Use your ShopVac or broom to remove all old ashes from the fireplace and any surrounding areas. For the fine layers of soot that remain use your damp rinsed out rag to wipe it away. It would also be a good idea to use the same rag to clean the flute, if possible, and walls of the fireplace. At this point you can put the grate back into the fireplace and begin to set your pieces of wood for a warm, cozy fire. Sit back and relax!

November is National Diabetes Month

The CDC states that nearly 27 million people in the United States has diabetes.

Diabetes is a disorder that affects the way your body uses food for energy. Usually, the sugar you take in is digested and broken down into a simple sugar, called glucose. The glucose is then circulated in your blood where it waits to enter cells to be used as fuel. Insulin, which is a hormone that your pancreas produces in order to help your body move the glucose into cells. A healthy pancreas will adjust the amounts of insulin based on the level of glucose. But, if you have diabetes, this process breaks down, and blood sugar levels become too high.

Throughout this month I will post information to try and help the community become more aware of the signs, symptoms and ways to help manage their diabetes.

There are two types of diabetes:
Type 1 - Is when your body makes little or no insulin

Type 2 - Is when your body produces insulin but your cells do not use it well

Below I have listed some of the symptoms of Type 1 diabetes. Please just use this list as a guide not as a diagnosis. You should make an appointment with your doctor to have yourself checked out properly.

Increased thirst
Frequent urination
Weight loss
Extreme hunger pains
Blurred vision
Irritability
Nausea
Vomiting

I have learned that one of the most common signs of dehydration is a headache. Failure to drink enough water can cause your brain to shrink. Research shows that dehydration not only affects the size of the brain but also how it works, just 90 minutes of steady sweating can make your brain shrink as much as a year of ageing. The good news is that after a drink of water the brain will return to normal.

Lack of water also causes the grey matter to work harder to process the same information. Over days and weeks, lack of fluid could impact our performance at work, school and even on exam results.

So if you can, always try to keep a reusable bottle of water around for yourself and children.

Painful Kidney Stones

I had heard from several people how painful kidney stones could be. The funny thing is they would always say it's worst than having a baby. Mothers, we know their is no pain like when you are having your baby.

Well, I was at work one day and began noticing severe pains in my right lower side. I dismissed the pain, like many of us do, and continued on with my daily routine. Days went by and the pain came back again but, this time much worse. This time I was rushed to the hospital and had to undergo surgery for kidney stones.

What a terrrible ordeal. The surgery was over and I thought all would be fine. No such luck. About a month later kidney stones returned again. This time with a vengeance. Had surgery again and vowed I would research and find a way to rid myself of these evil little stones.

Ladies and gentlemen I found that grapes where a natural enemy of the kidney stone. It naturally and quickly breaks the stone down until it is gone. Now as a prevention matter I eat a bunch of grapes at least twice a month.

Bye, bye kidney stones. Since I began eating grapes on a continuous basis I have not had any kidney stones to return.

So for those of you who have had this same problem, give it a try!

Should I Use Microfiber towels?

Microfiber towels are the greatest when cleaning windows, mirrors or glass storm doors. They even work well when wet to remove stains from fabric furniture.

Did you know that microfiber towels are made up of 80 to 85 percent polyester, also known as plastic. Plastic can scratch sealants and coatings off of many surfaces after continued use.

So when cleaning surfaces that are painted or sealed, marbles, granites and even laminate, please remember that microfiber towels can damage when used often.

Toilet Bowl Rings

If you have embarrassing and ugly toilet bowl rings here is an easy fix to get rid of them.

You will need a pair of gloves and a pumice stone. Yes, I did say pumice stone. The kind you use to remove dry skin from your feet.

Put on your gloves and then to makes things easier shut off the water to the toilet by turning the shut off valve, usually located to the right of the toilet. Flush the toilet one time, this will help to lower the water in the bowl so that you can begin scrubbing directly on the ring. Don't worry the stone will not scratch or damage the porcelain bowl. Continue rubbing the ringed area until removed. When scrubbing take time to splash a little water on the area from time to time.

When finished turn the water back on by turning shut off valve again. Flush and be proud of your new shiny and clean toilet bowl.

Antibacterial products and Septic tanks

If you are one of the many people whose home is on a septic system, dont use antibacterial soaps, shampoos, liquid dish soaps or laundry detergents. Septic systems depend on enzymes in order to break down solid waste. Antibacterial soaps and detergents kill the necessary enzymes that are needed to carry out this process.

How Mobile Phone Recycling can Benefit You and the Environment

I am passionate about recycling and helping our planet. I also think that we should all try to contribute to being greener and having a more positive impact on the world. I work with a comparison website that compares prices when you recycle mobile phones. They want to see more phones recycled which in turn means less pollution in landfill sites and less mining for new materials, which, destroys habitats for wildlife. I am pleased to write as a guest and hope I have helped you think about recycling.

So we all know that Apple is trademark and patent happy when it comes to their "innovations", so why would one of the more notable phrases from arguably one of the most popular tech companies for one the most popular tech devices be any different.

Gone are the days of jokingly mentioning "There's an App for That" unless you want a small legal team to remind you it's not yours with a strongly worded "cease-and-desist" letter. Now, "There's an App for That" belongs to Apple exclusively. What does this do to their competitors - nothing, but it sure makes an interesting story.

The title may seem confusing, but it's because it's all so confusing. The actor on those infamous "Hi, I'm A Mac" commercials is the proud owner of a JAILBROKEN iPhone - I know "HOW COULD HE DO THIS TO US, BETTER YET TO APPLE!?".

Though it's not that serious, I wonder what Mr. Jobs is over there thinking. I mean it's legal, just not that great of a thing to do. A lot of people complain about the performance of their jailbroken phones, which is all besides the point. Check out the vid with the actor, Justin Long, admitting to Jimmy Fallon his love for his jailbroken iPhone.
