BlackBerry How-To: Turn on Javascript on BlackBerry

Ok, so you visit all of these cool websites  on your BlackBerry and you get to your favorite website and what happens...nothing, that's the problem or maybe even a funky little error alert reminding you that your phone does not support Javascript.

Well you are totally in luck, because most likely your BlackBerry DOES SUPPORT JAVASCRIPT, you just have to know how to turn it on, sounds too simple right, well it is.

Before I get into the miraculously easy process of turning on JavaScript support on your BlackBerry (and trust me, it is sooo simple), let me remind you why you may want it. It's simply because websites are cooler and even function with it on, no really they actually work on your phone this way. Luckily, this problem should not arise often as many of your favorite websites have developed  miniature versions of their own websites to fit comfortably on your little handheld device. This tip is for the sites who have simply not got on the ship yet (including SimpleLeap and don't ask why, lol).

Ok, enough of the blabber and on to the directions...

Temporary Fix (will override existing browser settings)

  1. From your BlackBerry home screen, open your BlackBerry browser (remember, there are other choices beyond the installed BlackBerry browser for your BlackBerry surfing needs, but this works in your BlackBerry browser).

  2. Once your BlackBerry browser is open visit a webpage and  press the letter "J".

To Always have Javascript enabled (Warning: May slow down your browsing)

  1. From your BlackBerry home screen, open your BlackBerry browser.

  2. Press the BlackBerry menu button.

  3. Click on "Options".

  4. Select "Browser Configuration".

  5. Select "Support Javascript".

  6. Press the BlackBerry back button.

  7. Save the changes.

That's it, it's that simple. You can now view webpages with Javascript on them, now you know.

Adios!

How-To: Delete Apps from the iPhone

Downloading iPhone and iPod Touch apps are one of my favorite things to do on my iPhone device, but when I simply don't appreciate an application's greatness (that's the nice way of putting it right, lol) I want to usually get it off of my iPhone as soon as possible.

This is where your appreciation of the iPhone's ease of use comes to play. It is so great to know that not only is it easy to download and install third-party applications to your iPhone, but you can remove them just as quickly and easily as well.

  1. iPhone Delete App - SimpleLeap.comFrom your iPhone home screen, press down on any icon until you see the icons start to shake.

  2. iPhone Delete App - SimpleLeap.comOnce you see the icons shaking, the icons that you are able to delete will be denoted with an "x" in the corner.

  3. Tap on the application you wish to delete.

  4. iPhone Delete App 1 - SimpleLeap.comOnce you have tapped on the application, a prompt will appear asking if you are sure you would like to delete the application. Tap on "Delete".

  5. After you have tapped "Delete" the application icon should disappear instantly and should be removed from your device permanently.

  6. You can repeat these steps to remove other applications or simply press the " Home Button" (the big main button located at the bottom of your iPhone) to return the applications to their original state.

Tips:

  1. To ensure this application doesn't reappear on your iPhone when you sync your device with your desktop, make sure the application is removed in your list of applications within iTunes also

  2. As a backup for your paid iPhone applications you may want to keep the application in  iTunes and  change the settings in iTunes to allow you not to sync all applications, only the applciations you want to save.

  3. This method also works to remove the shortcut icons you create on your iPhone.

Now go and delete away.

10 Things You Must Do with your New BlackBerry - Part 3

This is the last part of this three part series. If you missed the first two, view them here: Part 1 and Part 2. Now let's keep it moving.

#4 -Send messages using your pin number.

You can send messages directly to a BlackBerry user's PIN rather than to the user's email address.  This is best for getting customer support directly from your service provider or contacting others when you have no direct connection aka( no wireless or data connection).

Sending PIN messages on your BlackBerry is horribly simple to do, you just need another user's BlackBerry pin. You can only get this by asking the other user for it, this is not published anywhere (unless they do it themselves) to my knowledge.

Just follow the steps below to compose your first PIN message on your BlackBerry:

  1. Open your email composer.

  2. Compose a new message

  3. In the "To" field enter the user's pin number you wish to send a PIN message

  4. Compose your message, and send it as usually would send an email message.

#3 - Maintain your BlackBerry battery life.

There are lots of ways to save your BlackBerry battery life, but you must know an important few to save your battery life for those crucial Cram moments or that important phone call to your clients.

  1. Minimize your use of third-party applications.

  2. Adjust your backlight settings.

  3. Adjust your connection settings.

  4. Adjust your notification settings.

#2 - Update your BlackBerry software.

For newbies this to me seems like one of the most complicated things to learn in the entire BlackBerry realm, but don't fret I have provided the link to detailed directions on BlackBerry's website on how to update your software after a general explanation on the 'why'.

There are many reasons to keep update software on your BlackBerry, the most important is simply to have access to the all of the recently added features that BlackBerry releases. With every releases comes bug fixes, feature updates, and more. If you are having any weird, unexplained issues with your BlackBerry, typically an update can resolve this as well.

Now for the detailed directions provided by BlackBerry themselves...

# 1 - Learn your Shortcuts.

So many BlackBerry shortcuts, so little time. There are few that I favor most, because of how much time they have saved me.

  1. Alt + BlackBerry Back Button = quick menu to applications on your phone

  2. T = takes you to the first email message in your mailbox

  3. B = takes you to the last email message in your mailbox

  4. N = Move to the next date in your email mailbox

  5. P = Move to the previous date in your email mailbox

  6. Open an email message and press T = takes you to the top of an email message

  7. Open an email message and press B = takes you to the bottom of an email message

  8. Alt + Shift + H = Help screen

  9. Alt+ Right Shift + Del = Soft Reset

  10. Space = to replace the "@" and "." in an email address

Ok. That is it. We have gone through the basics of BlackBerry. Any questions or suggestions, leave them in the comments.

Chao!

How-To: Create Shortcuts on your iPhone & iPod Touch

Do you have any favorite websites that you frequent on your iPhone or iPod Touch? Would you like some way to visit them quickly, with a touch of a button? Then you must know how to create home screen shortcuts on your iPhone. Bookmarking your favorite websites using home screen shortcut buttons can truly save you time. Best of all, it is extremely simple to do. The only thing that will stop you from bookmarking all of your favorite websites is the limit of icons you can have on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Luckily it is a really high limit and not many people will even get close to maxing out.

Let's see how this works...

1. From your iPhone or iPod Touch home screen, tap on the Safari icon to get on the Internet.

iPhone Internet Screen -SimpleLeap.com

2. Once you have accessed the Internet, visit any of your favorite websites and press the "+" on the bottom bar.

Add to Home Screen - SimpleLeap.com

3. After you have tapped the "+" button, a menu will pop-up with three options, tap "Add to Home Screen" to create the bookmark.

Add Name - SimpleLeap.com

4. You will be prompted to add a name to the shortcut, this most likely will be prefilled with the website title, but you can rename this to a title that you prefer.

5. Tap on "Add" at the top of the screen.

Shortcut Icon - SimpleLeap.com

6. This will instantly create an icon that represents your favorite website on your home screen.

See, as simple as APPLE pie (ok that was bad), but it was.

To access this website later, simply click on the icon as you do with any other application on your iPhone or iPod Touch and you will be directed to your website instantly.

Until later, Chao!

10 Things You Must Do with your New BlackBerry - Part 2

So...on to part two shall we. Just in case you missed part one... 10 Things you Must Do with your New BlackBerry - Part 1

#7 - Download some apps

Well of course we would say this, we make lots of neat apps for your BlackBerry . No really besides that , apps honestly make the device more useful. There are tons of apps for the BlackBerry, that might literally fit your every need. Here at SimpleLeap, besides our own apps, we have our favorites. I have listed below a few app suggestions and places where you can find loads of third-party BlackBerry applications in one place.

If you have never installed third party applications for your BlackBerry, please read the How-To on Downloading Third Party BlackBerry Apps. Also remember if there is a trial available (and there almost  always is, USE IT)

Personal Productivity BlackBerry Apps:

  • Viigo - RSS/Blog Feed (Patrick's favorite -  he likes his news on the go, but he warns to not pull so much it can make the BlackBerry slow)

  • Appetite - Grocery list and recipe manager

  • Pandora - Radio for your BlackBerry

  • BlackPing - Post your status to Ping.fm which post your status to each your social network

Student BlackBerry Apps:

  • Student Docket - Student assignment/schedule planner

  • Cram - Study and flashcard tool-in-one

  • MSDict- Dictionary (kinda self explanatory)

Business BlackBerry Apps:

  • eOffice - Document manager for your BlackBerry

  • TalkLater - Call Reminder Utility

  • Call Client - Phone call manager, lets you make phone calls back to back and mark notes for each call (for hardcore roadies, salesmen, and phone addicts)

Places to Download Third-Party Apps:

Always try to REMEMBER to download from the developer's site if you can, this is typically best for everyone.

  • Mobihand - large selection, organized

  • GetJar - huge selection, a little to huge...this should keep you busy for awhile

  • Handango - it's a source, nothing to scream about

  • Handmark - limited selection

  • ClickApps - very limited selection

  • CNET - alot of the top apps (just because it's the top app, means nothing)

  • BlackBerry App World - new, slow, decent selection

  • BerryStore - better to for free apps (SOMETIMES you get what you pay for, NOT ALL THE TIME)

#6 - Rearrange your home screen icons

This is a great idea after you have installed all of those great apps, the icons will be scattered everywhere on your home screen and nobody wants a cluttered screen. We did purchase the BlackBerry to help us become organized, not because of that nice looking screen or cool app right ;)

So here is how to rearrange your home screen icons:

  1. From your BlackBerry home screen (the full screen, not the short list of five icons on the side) hover over the icon you wish to relocate

  2. Press the BlackBerry menu button

  3. Select Move from the list

  4. Use your BlackBerry trackball to move the icon where you would like it be

  5. Press the BlackBerry trackball in to place it there.

#5 - Personalize your BlackBerry

Ok. You now have cool apps, in the place you want them... how about that boring, so unlike you BlackBerry background or how about those ringtones.

Easy problem to solve. Download some themes and ringtones silly. They are easy to find and usually in the same place as the third-party apps (reference the list above).

I have listed the theme we have on BlackBerries and some other sources to find more.

So long...until next time...Part 3 (Coming to you on Monday!)

How-To: Update Your iPhone Software

There are several reasons besides being the 'cool kid in school' to keep your iPhone software updated. The first and most important in my opinion is to save your iPhone's battery life. Apple suggests that their engineers are always working on ways to optimize the battery life of your iPhone and the performance enhancements are installed with the software update.

Another reason is to help ensure that your applications run at optimal performance. You may want to perform a iPhone software update when you find that alot of your favorite iPhone applications lag at one time or another.  To resolve this annoying lag issue, it helps to update both the actual iPhone applications and your iPhone software on your device.

It is so simple to update your iPhone software. All you need in order to perform the update is your iPhone, the sync/charge cable that your phone came with,  and a computer that runs iTunes 7.7 (or higher). Please make sure before you update that you version of iTunes is up to date itself (iTunes reminds you when to update and it does it OFTEN, too often IMHO).

iPhone Update Screen - SimpleLeap.com

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer running iTunes 7.7+using your sync/charge cable that came with your iPhone.

  2. Open iTunes on your computer.

  3. Select iPhone in the Source List (the list on the left side of the screen).

  4. In the Summary panel, click "Check for Updates" to see if there's a new version of the iPhone software available.

  5. Click on "Update" and this will install the latest version of the iPhone software onto your device.

How To: 5 Ways to Save Battery Life on your iPhone

Isn't it always the case that when you have to make that important phone call , send that amazing photo, or have an emergency Cram session that your battery life is low. Well in this iPhone How-To, we are going to show you a few ways to save that oh so crucial battery life.

Follow along, you will love us for it.

1. Minimize your use of third-party apps.

That's right. Those awesome iPhone apps that you download do drain your battery. The good news is as long as you minimize your use of third-party apps you should be fine. Also remember, all iPhone apps aren't equal. There are just some apps , particularly games or apps that utilize vibration or GPS within the app, that can run your battery down.

2. Only pull one email account.

Add Email Account on iPhone

Instead of retrieving your email from multiple accounts, try pulling only one or two email accounts. It just takes more battery power to do it. Try setting up your multiple email accounts and feeding it into one account, this way you are only pulling one account on your phone.

3. Turn down your screen.

Adjust Brightness on iPhone

It's that simple, turn it down. Simply go to your iPhone Settings --> Brightness , and lower the brightness of your screen. It's that easy.

4. Turn off GPS.

Adjust Location Services/GPS Settings

On your iPhone, go to Settings--> General --> and use the slider to turn off "Location Services" aka GPS.

5.  Turn off your iPhone WiFi.

Adjust Wireless Settings on iPhone

Again, on your iPhone, go to Settings--> Wi-Fi--> and use the slider to turn off "Wi-Fi".

That's it, start saving your battery power.
